    Is Russia going to turn into a biofuel paradise?

    — Gazprom Neft operating Russia's first LNG bunkering tanker is also set to develop a biofuel programme. The company has developed a formula of marine fuel on a biocomponent basis with used cooking oil as one of the components. The new technology will let produce 600-800 thousand tonnes of biofuel in Russia which is a good alternative to other fuels. The only issue to solve is to ensure the required number of calls to Russian ports by ships ready to operate on this fuel.

    Meanwhile, Australian shipbuilder Incat Tasmania specializing in production of pure-electric lightweight zero-emission ferries, has under construction the largest lightweight battery electric ship (130 m in length) so far constructed in the world for delivery to its South American customer, Buquebus. In this context we remind about the earlier forecast of Aleksey Rakhmanov, the then General Director of United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), who expects the era of overwhelming electric propulsion to begin in 15-20 years. Looks like it can begin earlier.

    The Gothenburg Port Authority is set to make shipping cleaner without involving ships powered by biofuel or electricity. It has started developing an entirely new digital port call solution in collaboration with maritime operators. In addition to reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 1000 tons per year, the solution “Digital Port Call” will lead to time and cost savings for vessels calling at the port.
