Petersburg Oil Terminal acquires two skimmers for its emergency response unit
As part of the project on creating an in-house emergency response unit, Petersburg Oil Terminal (POT, Big Port St. Petersburg) has acquired two skimmers for collection of spilled oil and oil products. The equipment tests show it can start working within several minutes, says the company.
One weir skimmer and one mop skimmer have been purchased from a Russian company Lessorb. The transaction cost has not been revealed.
Mop skimmer СЩ-20 is intended for collection of spilled oil and oil products from water surface (in streaming waters with relatively small waves. The skimmer’s low draft (250 mm) lets it work in shallow waters. POT says it is one of the most efficient skimmers showing the highest performance in cases when oils sills are limited with booms.
Weir skimmer СП-7 is optimal for collecting light and middle oils in calm waters.
According to Mikhail Skigin, the purchase of skimers is yet another step towards improvement of environmental safety at the terminal. He reminded that POT was the first to install popup booms in Russian part of the Baltic Sea. With them, localization of oil spills is possible within the minimum period of time.
“Environmental safety has always been a priority for POT. To ensure the most fast respond to possible oil spills we have decided to create an in-house emergency response unit. Of course, it should have a state-of-the-art equipment”, he said.
Petersburg Oil Terminal offers hi-tech acceptance and storage of oil products delivered by railways, rivers and roads as well as transshipment of oil products onto sea going ships.
