RS should be involved in designing of innovative Arctic class marine facilities
To ensure the development of Russia’s Arctic shelf domestic design bureaus have developed and continue developing a number of innovative designs of marine facilities. As Vladimir Antonov, Chief Engineer of Saint-Petersburg Marine Design Bureau "Malachite" OJSC, told IAA PortNews at the International conference “Vital Issues of Shipping and Shipbuilding Development”, Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) should be involved in this process.
According to Vladimir Antonov, many of the new projects are associated with underwater operations and nuclear industry facilities: submarine tankers; underwater drilling units; underwater power modules; underwater support ships; etc. Underwater facilities feature have some advantages against the floating and fixed facilities. Avoiding ice, wave, wind, rocking and temperature loads are among the key advantages. Efficiency of such facilities is higher if they are equipped with non-conventional nuclear power plants.
“Since RS requirements are funDamental for safety and reliability of vessels and facilities, RS should be involved in designing of the mentioned innovative facilities at the early phases. The above facilities are not covered by the existing RS Regulations but designers would like to know in advance what requirements are applicable to the structures, equipment and facilities to ensure correct designing and reduce RS amendments,” Vladimir Antonov said.
International conference “Vital Issues of Shipping and Shipbuilding Development” is being held in Saint-Petersburg on June 23-24, 2015. The conference organizers: Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS), State Marine Technical University of St. Petersburg and Sovcomflot.
