Yachting around the Gulf of Finland islands

Breathing in the sea wind and enjoying the ship answering her helm is a must for anyone willing to connect his or her life with the sea. For that purpose, Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping has a yacht-club for students to practice and hone their skills. The University’s fleet numbers 12 yachts and a motor boat.

The route is long with the start in Saint-Petersburg, from the yacht-club on the Petrovskaya spit, passage through the Northern navigation opening of the dam, sailing around the Styrsudden cape where navigation is challenging due to numerous rocks under water, crossing the Bjorkosund strait, then passing off Primorsk, across the Maly Petrovsky strait to the Zapadny Beryozovy island for an overnight stop. The next day schedule includes the transit to the Vikhrevoy island and arrival at the Sovetsky settlement.

The course participants are people with different levels of competence.  Among them are those who participated in sea voyages on the Mir sailship.

An exciting destination contributes to the training process efficiency. Visiting islands is an adventure going back to the history of the Karelian Isthmus.

The Zapadny Beryozovy island is a training base of Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping. In June-July, cadets of Admiral Makarov SUNIS usually have their summer practice here.

The Vikhrevoy island is an abandoned site with the remains of some facilities such as a pilot station with a watch tower.

Over a year, the yacht named Polyus welcomes more than a hundred of trainees. Almost each sail boat in the water area of the Gulf of Finland has people who started their way on this boat.

We are grateful to Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping for this yachting experience.
