Hydrogen for Russian ships and tankers for carbon dioxide: “Bunker Market. Prices” digest
- Russia develops the technologies for using hydrogen by water transport. Under the state order, Siberian State University of Water Transport has started implementing an R&D project “Hydrogen energy in water transport, development of storage systems and application of new environmentally friendly fuels”. Ak Bars Shipbuilding Corporation plans to deliver the first hydrogen-powered passenger ship by the end of 2023. The hull has already been assembled with the interior works underway. The company will continue considering the developments for ships powered by LNG, hydrogen and electricity.
It should be noted that the segment of passenger ships is the most promising for application of environmentally friendly fuels in Russia since it ensures higher level of comfort while the loss of useful space is not that critical as compared with cargo ships.
Meanwhile, transport fleet for transportation of alternative fuels and CO2 is under construction in the world. Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, a part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group and Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd., a Tokyo-based joint venture for ship design and sales between Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and Japan Marine United Corporation have started joint study for the development of an ocean-going liquified CO2 (LCO2) carrier. Nihon Shipyard is pursuing this project with the aim of completing construction of the vessel from 2027 onwards.
In their turn, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Inc. signed the basic agreement for the long-term charter of a methanol carrier, which can run on either methanol or conventional heavy fuel oil.
