“Bunker Market. Prices”: loaded South and LNG bunkering in the Baltic

In January-March 2023, throughput of Russian seaports grew considerably, by 10%, mostly due to the growth of dry cargo (+17%). The highest increase was shown by the ports of the Southern basin which is an evidence of the increasingly high role of the North-South international transport corridor. Underway is a joint work with the Iranian partners on creation of a regular shipping line. A Russian-Iranian joint venture  has been established.

Meanwhile, the market players note numerous aspects hindering the progressive development of the North-South ITC: acute deficit of port infrastructure, shallowing of the Volga-Caspian Canal and costly icebreaker assistance in the Caspian region.

LNG bunkering is developing in Russia and in the world. Regular LNG bunkering is provided to new ferries operating on a highly important sea line between Ust-Luga and Baltiysk. Russia’s first LNG bunkering tanker Dmitry Meneleyev operates in the Gulf of Finland.

As for the use of alternative types of fuel in other countries, ClassNK has certified the first LNG dual-fuelled chemical tanker in Japan and CSSC has set a record with its order to build 16 methanol fueled container ships for CMA CGM.
