Russian Maritime Register of Shipping to participate in Gastech 2017
Russian Maritime Register of Shipping will present its competence in the Arctic maritime gas transportation at the international exhibition Gastech 2017 that will be held on 4 – 7 April in Tokyo, Japan.
One hundred years of experience in ice ship classification is the RS core feature. To improve gas carriers safety during the operation in the extreme environmental conditions of Arctic seas, RS actively carries out scientific work consisting of a number of actual and sophisticated matters for determination of permissible hydrodynamic loads on membrane tank walls during the oscillating LNG movements while transportation.
Gearing to development of technology and needs of the customers, the Register improves its normative base, widens the service package, introduces new descriptive notations to raise the information value of the RS class notation for shipowners, freighters and shipping companies.
In 2016 the following new distinguishing marks were introduced in the RS rules:
GCU (gas combustion unit) means the availability of the installation for disposing excess cargo vapour by thermal oxidation on board the ship that enables to improve the safety of the cargo transportation;
RGU (regasification unit) means that the ship is fitted with regasification unit for cargo export to shore not using the shore regasification terminals.
Practical experience of survey during gas carrier construction is implemented by the RS specialists at the leasing shipyards of the South Korea where a series of Arctic class ships is built for the RS class, and “Christoph de Margerie” is the first ship of the series.
The unique project allowed to combine in one ship the icebreaker shape and hull reinforcements, three Azipod propulsion systems, load capacity of 172 600 cu. m equipment designed for low temperature operation (up to – 50 С), high manoeuvrability and icebreaking capability(up to 2,1 m) that ensure effectiveness and safety during gas transportation within Yamal LNG project.
Besides, the first FSRU type Arctic class ship (Arc4) class is now under construction. In general, the RS book of orders for LNG transportation ships is completed till 2019. For project engineering support 60 RS specialists have been trained in the field of survey of such sophisticated ships under construction and in service.
Reference: International exhibition and conference Gastech is a broad-scale forum for the leading companies of gas and allied sectors covering commercial and technical issues related to the entire chain of natural and liquefied gas delivery. The event started in 1972 and has variable locations worldwide. Over 600 international exhibitors showcasing the latest innovations in entire gas and LNG value chain.
Established in 1913, Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) is one of the leading classification societies. Recognised by the European Union. Member of IACS. The RS activity is aimed at enhancing high standards of maritime safety and minimising the negative impact of human activities on the environment through scientifically based risk assessment and risk management procedures.
